REBECCA WEST: Child custody and visitation cases come about in two different ways. Generally they're through a divorce action, in addition to that between unmarried couples in a custody battle or perhaps even by a grandparent requesting visitation or custody of their grandchild.

Our staff from the top to the bottom understands that they are to maintain privacy of all the information they receive. What we try to do is provide the client with a risk assessment so that they understand what the risk is of taking certain legal positions and then they can make their decision accordingly.

Some attorneys just assume that clients know all of the lingo and the processes of divorce and custody litigation. We know by experience that that's not always the case, so we do our best to educate the client, not only on the law but about what's going to happen.

This is their life. This is not our life. The more they understand about the process and about the law, they more they are able to participate in their own litigation and they're able to make the best decision for them.
